emerge --info

After updating xfce-base/xfdesktop 4.8.1 to 4.8.2, Xchat 2.8.8 refuses to enable transparent backgrounds with the following message:

"Unable to set transparent background!
You may be using a non-compliant window
manager that is not currently supported."


Going back to xfdesktop 4.8.1 "solves" the problem.

This was done on purpose by upstream regarding

http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7442

and

http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/commit/?id=bf07cc01b5457067303bdfad93433def548b6172

So while annoying, 4.8.2 is actually intended to behave like this until the upstream commit gets replaced by another fix

Also this is why we have no plans on stabilizing 4.8.2 until we absolutely have to, and we might have to when xorg-server-1.10 goes stable
