I have experimented previously with the issue that appears to cause it, which is kernels with a version of 2.4.22 upwards, it appears to be a common core issue in all those kernels available to me (I need XFS support). Any drives connected to a Promise controller are not available at all, which means that if the install is supposed to be on one of those drives, the user will be unable to install. In my specific case I have an onboard Promise PDC20276 controller, which my IDE HDDs are connected to. So when I boot from the latest LiveCD I only get /dev/hda (the DVD/CDRW I booted off of, which is connected to the VIA controller on the motherboard) available. There is however a simple solution to the problem, which is to enable the "Special FastTrak Feature" (CONFIG_PDC202XX_FORCE) option in the kernel, which then makes the drives available when booting from it. I would assume that the current kernel build for the LiveCDs does not have this option enabled, since I can use these drives in 2.4.22+/beta 2.6 kernels only with this option enabled. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from the LiveCD. 2. Attempt to mount/manipulate and drives attached to the Promise controller. Actual Results: Failure, because they did not show in the /dev filesystem. Expected Results: Shown the drives in the /dev filesystem.
