Description John J. Aylward 2011-04-15 20:48:31 UTC
Fails with python settings as such:

$ eselect python list
Available Python interpreters:
  [1]   python2.6
  [2]   python2.7
  [3]   python3.1 *

>>> Install comix-4.0.4 into /var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/comix-4.0.4/image/ category media-gfx
  File "install.py", line 177
    print __doc__

works fine when I manually switch to python 2.7 or 2.6

Reproducible: Always

media-gfx/comix-4.0.4 was built with the following:
USE="(consolekit) (multilib) (policykit) rar" LINGUAS="ja -ca -cs -es -fr -hr -hu -id -ko -pl -pt_BR -ru -sv -zh_CN -zh_TW"

emerge -pqv =media-gfx/comix-4.0.4
[ebuild R ] media-gfx/comix-4.0.4 USE="rar" LINGUAS="ja -ca -cs -es -fr -hr -hu -id -ko -pl -pt_BR -ru -sv -zh_CN -zh_TW"

It's marked as rebuild because I installed it properly with python 2.7
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-04-22 02:41:32 UTC
Er, what version of python did it fail with?

Ensure use of Python 2 at install and run time.

Jeroen,

Comix uses the old print syntax in its code and its install script, so it fails with Python 3. Here’s a patch that seems to make it work again for me. Please check whether Python 2.* shouldn’t also be an actual dependency of some kind in there (I’m rather clueless about Python packaging).

got hit by this in a fresh install with python-3.2
the patch works for me.
Comment 6 Tim Harder gentoo-dev 2012-03-21 16:56:55 UTC
Is this package even worth keeping around anymore when there's media-gfx/mcomix?
Comment 7 Ewgenij Starostin 2012-03-22 00:21:33 UTC
Nope. mcomix apparently works just the same; it changes a couple of key mappings and keeps its library in a different place, though. For the second issue (just to have it noted somewhere):
    mkdir -p -m700 "$HOME/.local/share/mcomix"
    cp "$HOME"/.local/share/{,m}comix/library.db
(even though the mcomix database has one more table; it seems to create that one automatically if it’s missing, so that’s okay).
Comment 8 John J. Aylward 2012-09-13 00:43:14 UTC
If everyone agrees that mcomix is a better, or at least supported by upstream, program (I've been using it for months now and like it just fine), maybe this package should just be masked/deprecated?

It seems that comix hasn't been worked on in 3.5 years upstream.

Applied modified version of this to Portage. Thanks.

The package still needs work to not install .pyc into image but do it in pkg_ phase... but that's unrelated to this bug, so closing
