I watched the stupid thing get built, then fail to get installed with the merge. I re-emerged libpwdb, etc, and still 0.77 fails to install pam_pwdb module, but the previous version of pam installs it fine. The URL I provided is a log of the whole thing. Here's my info: Portage 2.0.49-r18 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.3_pre20031212-r0, 2.6.0-test11-bk7-reiser4) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.0-test11-bk7-reiser4 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.12 ccache version 2.3 [disabled] ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs userpriv" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib alsa apache2 apm arts avi berkdb bonobo cdr crypt cups directfb dv dvd dvdr encode esd evo faad fam flac flash foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile imagemagick imap imlib imlib2 jabber jack java javascript jpeg kde ldap libg++ libwww mad maildir mcal mikmod mmx mng motif mozilla mpeg msn mysql nas ncurses nls nptl nvidia offensive ofx oggvorbis opengl oscar oss pam pcap pdflib perl physfs pic png ppds psyco python qt quicktime readline samba sasl scanner sdl slang snmp socks5 sox speex spell sse ssl stroke svga tcltk tcpd tetex tiff transcode truetype usb wmf wxwindows x86 xine xml2 xmms xv xvid yahoo zlib" Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
By the way, this is not a dupe. I checked.
I just upgraded to pam-0.77 as well, and I am unable to fetch my mail via pop3 (qpopper-4.0.5), and I get a pam error: -ERR [AUTH] PAM authentication failed for user "[deleted]": Module is unknown (28) Is this related?

Okay, now I know this is related: popper[4371]: PAM [dlerror: /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] Is this bug moving anywhere? I see it was filed on the 17th.
downgrading to pam-0.75-r11 fixed the problem.
with USE="pwdb" built pam-0.77 a /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
Hell's Bells, it worked here. Thanks a lot! I think this can be closed now.
Adding the USE=pwdb flag works for me as well. Maybe this should be documented in the Changelog? or on the USE flag page.
Just adding to the list of people who can confirm the extra USE flag works... Because it did for me :)
you can see the use flags of an ebuild with emerge -pv pam.
