Description Juergen Rose 2011-03-23 07:29:48 UTC
'emerge -pvuDN world' complains about missing video_cards_radeon USE flag for libdrm:

root@thinkpad:/root(30)# emerge -pvuDN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "x11-libs/libdrm[video_cards_radeon]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.24 (Change USE: +video_cards_radeon)
(dependency required by "x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.14.1" [installed])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

But it seems that there is no video_cards_radeon USE flag for libdrm:
root@thinkpad:/root(31)# emerge -pvD x11-libs/libdrm

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.24 USE="libkms -static-libs" VIDEO_CARDS="-intel -nouveau -radeon -vmware" 0 kB

There seems to be only a radeon USE flag, which could be set.
ufed shows me neither information about a radeon nor a video_cards_radeon USE flag. 'man ufed' says, that USE flags are set in /etc/make.profile/make.defaults and /etc/make.profile/use.defaults:

FILES
       /etc/make.conf
              Contains user specified USE flags

       /etc/make.conf.old
This is where ufed places a backup of your make.conf file.

       /etc/make.profile/make.defaults
              Contains system default USE flags

       /etc/make.profile/use.defaults
Provides an automatic ebuild to USE flag mapping ('auto' flags)

       /etc/make.profile/use.mask
              Restricted USE flags

       /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc
Description strings for global USE flags

       /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc
Description strings for local USE flags

But the files /etc/make.profile/make.defaults and /etc/make.profile/use.defaults do not exist on my machines:

root@thinkpad:/root(21)# ll /etc/make.profile/make.defaults /etc/make.profile/use.defaults
/bin/ls: cannot access /etc/make.profile/make.defaults: No such file or directory
/bin/ls: cannot access /etc/make.profile/use.defaults: No such file or directory

What is wrong? If I search radeon in /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc and /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc, I do not find anything:
root@thinkpad:/root(26)# grep radeon /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc
root@thinkpad:/root(27)# grep radeon /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc

Where I can find information about radeon and video_cards_radeon USE flags?

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Juergen Rose 2011-03-23 07:43:01 UTC
If I add radeon to /etc/make.conf nothing changes:

root@thinkpad:/root(35)# grep radeon /etc/make.conf
     radeon
     video_cards_radeon
# video_cards_radeon
#VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa fglrx"
#VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa displaylink"
root@thinkpad:/root(36)# grep "^VID" /etc/make.conf
VIDEO_CARDS="ati vesa displaylink"
root@thinkpad:/root(37)# emerge -pvuDN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy "x11-libs/libdrm[video_cards_radeon]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.24 (Change USE: +video_cards_radeon)
(dependency required by "x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.14.1" [installed])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])
root@thinkpad:/root(38)# emerge -pvD x11-libs/libdrm

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

[ebuild R ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.24 USE="libkms -static-libs" VIDEO_CARDS="-intel -nouveau -radeon -vmware" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB
Comment 2 René 'Necoro' Neumann 2011-03-27 11:40:47 UTC
You need to add 'VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"' to /etc/make.conf (or add radeon to the existant VIDEO_CARDS setting)

VIDEO_CARDS (and some others) are automatically expanded to the respective useflags. I.e. the above would get video_cards_radeon.
Comment 3 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-03-29 22:46:23 UTC
Looks like the best I can make of this report is that ufed does not support USE_EXPAND.
Comment 4 Sven Eden 2013-01-07 11:48:30 UTC
This is discussed in bug 205359 already. And it is planned as an enhancement to ufed, which means it is on my todo list.
