Description Romain Lalaut 2011-03-21 14:54:41 UTC
In some programs (chromium, kwin, oxygen qt style, oxygen kwin), some PNGs are displayed oddly (there seems to have only 256 colors and). But in other programs like konqueror, gimp, gwenview, the problem doesn't occur.

To illustrate the problem:
http://img834.imageshack.us/f/capture10q.png/

The problem started when I switched to kde-4.6 (from 4.4) but I don't know if it's related because the problem still occurs if I launch chromium in enlightnement for example.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open http://www.google.fr/images/nav_logo38.png with chromium
Actual Results:
You see an ugly image with few colors

Expected Results:
Real google colors

Can you describe the problematic areas in this example image?

Another example (more evident)

As you can see in the latest example, the png loaded in chromium is ugly but in gwenview there is no problem.
Also note the kwin window colors and the qt widget style (it's the default theme of kde 4.6 : oxygen). But I don't know if it's related to PNG...
Comment 6 Wormo (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-03-27 05:11:15 UTC
What version of libpng are you using?

Did the problem start soon after a libpng upgrade? Try 'qlop -l | grep png' if you don't remember...
Comment 7 Romain Lalaut 2011-03-27 10:46:38 UTC
My version of libpng is 1.4.5.

# cat /var/log/paludis.log | grep install | grep png
1300467944: starting install of package media-libs/libpng-1.4.5:0::gentoo (40 of 238)
1300467953: finished install of package media-libs/libpng-1.4.5:0::gentoo (40 of 238)

1300715063: finished clean of package media-libs/libpng-1.4.5:0::installed (1 of 1)
1300715064: finished install of package media-libs/libpng-1.4.5:0::gentoo (1 of 1)
1300715064: finished install of targets libpng
1300716432: starting install of package media-gfx/optipng-0.6.4:0::gentoo (2 of 18)
1300716437: finished install of package media-gfx/optipng-0.6.4:0::gentoo (2 of 18)

But, actually, I recently reinstalled all my system (from stage3) because I was in ~amd64 and I thought the problem came from that.
Now I'm in amd64 with these keywords files : http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/kde.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/package.keywords/kde-4.6.keywords and
sys-devel/gcc ~amd64
sys-apps/baselayout ~amd64
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources ~amd64
media-sound/oss-devel ~amd64
www-plugins/libflashsupport ~amd64
sys-apps/paludis ~amd64
net-fs/curlftpfs ~amd64
dev-lang/python ~amd64
app-admin/eselect-package-manager ~amd64
sys-apps/openrc ~amd64
app-admin/eselect ~amd64
net-misc/ksshaskpass ~amd64
x11-themes/oxygen-gtk ~amd64
net-print/cups ~amd64
media-sound/lingot ~amd64
kde-misc/kwebkitpart ~amd64
app-emulation/virtualbox-bin ~amd64
app-emulation/virtualbox-modules ~amd64
dev-util/aap ~amd64
dev-util/asciidoc ~amd64

The problem did not occur before I switched to kde-4.6.

An image and its thumbnail

I'm not sure it's related to kde because the problem still occurs in others desktop environments with non kde applications (eg. TWM + chromium)

Maybe an useful information, I found a PNG on wikipedia which displays correctly but not its thumbnail (c.f attachment).

There is also the diff between `identify -verbose` for the images. Many differences but the main which I noticed are
8c8
<   Type: TrueColor
---
>   Type: TrueColorMatte
15a16
>     alpha: 1-bit

Thanks for your help because, as a web developer, this bug is very critical for me.

Since the last emerge world, everything is ok... I think I'll never know what happened :)
