Description Ian Abbott 2011-03-08 11:42:38 UTC
On systems where /usr/lib is a symlink to /usr/lib64, preserve_old_lib_notify() in eutils.eclass can give misleading/incorrect advice.

For example, looking through my elogs, I saw the following for libnotify:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
WARN: postinst
Old versions of installed libraries were detected on your system.
In order to avoid breaking packages that depend on these old libs,
the libraries are not being removed. You need to run revdep-rebuild
in order to remove these old dependencies. If you do not have this
helper program, simply emerge the 'gentoolkit' package.

  # revdep-rebuild --library '/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1'

Once you've finished running revdep-rebuild, it should be safe to
delete the old libraries. Here is a copy & paste for the lazy:
  # rm '/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1'
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In my case, "revdep-rebuild --library '/usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1'" did not find any breakage. However, after deleting /usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1 and running revdep-rebuild with no parameters, many broken packages were detected. I assume this is because they were linked to /usr/lib/libnotify.so.1 and not /usr/lib64/libnotify.so.1 even though these were the same physical file.

Reproducible: Always
