Maybe there should be a new category for laptops/notebooks (and co.?) like app-notebooks, app-laptop or, when combining app-pda and various gsm-tools with it you could combine it as app-mobile. Searching through portage this (and probably more) programs would fit more or less (app-pda and gsm tools not included): app-misc/spicctrl app-misc/toshiba-utils sys-apps/acpi sys-apps/cpudyn sys-apps/cpufreqd sys-apps/speedfreq sys-apps/thinkpad sys-apps/tpb sys-apps/tpctl gnome-extra/acme gnome-extra/battstat gnome-extra/power-applet x11-misc/xbatt x11-misc/xbattbar x11-plugins/gkrellm-pmu x11-plugins/i8krellm x11-plugins/wmacpi x11-plugins/wmapm x11-plugins/wmapmload x11-plugins/wmbattery x11-plugins/wmbatppc x11-plugins/wmpower xfce-extra/xfce4-battery Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
Good point... BTW, what has GSM to do with laptops? :-) Radek
I'm not opposed to this, though I would nominate pcmcia-cs as an addition latexer, thoughts?
It seems like a good idea to me! I would be willing to assist. It would help users find packages related to their hardware, instead of having to use awkward and inacurate emerge -S
I'm definitely down for something like this. I'm wary of touching the gnome stuff, especially acme since there are mutlimedia keyboards for desktops, etc. Also, acpi techincally works for getting temperatures from desktops with ACPI working also, so that's kinda iffy. I'm kinda up in the air as to whether that makes sense to move or not. As for pcmcia-cs, that's a definite except for the small set of hardware like PCI->PCMCIA bridges and other things like that which end up making pcmcia-cs actually have an "alpha" keyword. I don't think that should keep us from moving pcmcia-cs though... (: I'm not so good at portage's "move foo" as it were, but maybe at tomorrow's bugday i can harrass seemant or someone to give me a whach with the clue stick.
I would nominate sys-apps/apmd for inclusion. It fits alongside acpi and tpctl.
Okay, started work on this tonight, here's what i've managed to get through so far: peter@gonzo app-laptop $ ls CVS configure-thinkpad radeontool thinkpad tpb acpi4asus i8kutils spicctrl toshiba-utils tpctl </snip> Others that i'd say should definitely move, but that i've not gotten to yet: sys-apps/powerbook-tools sys-apps/gtkpbbuttons x11-plugins/i8krellm sys-apps/s3switch x11-misc/xbatt x11-misc/xbattbar x11-plugins/wmbattery x11-plugins/wmbatppc x11-plugins/gkrellm-pmu xfce-extra/xfce4-battery Here's a list of ones that mostly seem okay, but are questionable in some regard: x11-plugins/wmacpi x11-plugins/wmapm x11-plugins/wmapmload x11-plugins/wmpower sys-apps/cpudyn sys-apps/cpufreqd sys-apps/speedfreq sys-apps/acpi gnome-extra/battstat gnome-extra/acme gnome-extra/power-applet Mostly these are questionable because either it's acpi/apm which really does work on non-laptops too, or it's gnome, and i'd want to get the gnome teams approval first. Any other devs who wanted to help with moving things, there's your targets. Non-dev people, any other packages you can think of that might warrant moving? i'm sleepy, i'll move more tomorrow.
i think battstat and power-applet are good to be in app-laptop. but acme is a multimedia keyboard app, so it isn't really specific to app-laptop.
Like lqx said acme doesn't really belong in this list, it is integrated in the control-center in gnome 2.6 anyway so the seperate pack will eventually be removed. The other 2 are afaics also available nowadays in core gnome2 packages, these are the gnome1 versions and i can tell they need some fixing anyway. But feel free to take them off our hands.
sys-apps/powerbook-tools sys-apps/gtkpbbuttons sys-apps/pbbuttonsd x11-plugins/wmbatppc x11-plugins/gkrellm-pmu sys-apps/pmud sys-apps/powerprefs have been taken care of, the only remaining is sys-apps/epbb
I suggest moving sys-apps/epbb to app-laptop and then close this bug. If people come up with more packages that needs to be moved to app-laptop they can open seperate bug reports.
Adding vapier@gentoo.org to CC: since he is the maintainter of sys-app/epbb.
doesnt really matter to me where the package lives so feel free to move it
Moved sys-apps/epbb to app-laptop/epbb. Closing this bug as FIXED.
