The Gentoo Oracle variables set suppose usage of tnsnames.ora configuration file. But source distribution (instantclient-basic-linux32-10.2.0.3-20061115.zip) doesn't contains an example configuration file (I guess, but not yet checked, that Oracle 11 instantclient distribution also contains no tnsnames.ora example). I suggest to add one (my experience says, that the one from FreeBSD oracle8-client-0.2.0_1 is good enough, the file will be attached). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install dev-db/oracle-instantclient-basic 2. Check the config dir (/etyc/oracle/) Actual Results: The directory is empty. Expected Results: The directory should contain at least an example configuration file tnsnames.ora.sample. In FreeBSD client the example config list also includes sqlnet.ora and listener.ora. The first one in our case may be also useful.
