When attempting to update my initrd, I noticed that genkernel was not detecting any modules. I looked through the log, and noticed it said the kernel version without the value of CONFIG_LOCALVERSION added to it. Also, the initrd it put in /boot was missing the local version.

From 3.4.12.1

From 3.4.11.1
