Description Georg Hennig 2010-12-29 17:31:17 UTC
Compiling lilypond-2.12.2 or 2.12.3 works fine with fontforge-20100501, however the fonts sometimes look "ugly", for example the treble clef. I'll try to attach a screenshot demonstrating the problem. Additionally, this problem has been described on archlinux (see attached link). They trace it down to a fontforge bug. Compiling lilypond-2.12.3 with the older fontforge-20090923 the fonts look fine.
I marked the bug as major, as the resulting PDF documents cannot be published that way, and there seems to be no workaround except for downgrading fontforge.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade fontforge to current stable release (fontforge-20100501)
2. Install current stable or unstable lilypond
3. Compile a music file with a treble clef
4. Watch it with your favourite PDF viewer

Are you aware if this also happens with the unstable lilypond versions(2.13.x) ? I don't like the idea of adding a dependency <media-gfx/fontforge-20100501 in lilypond ebuilds. Also, I don't understand exactly what is the failure (the png image doesn't say much). Please, can you explain better the whole problem?

(In reply to comment #4)
I understand that that a dependency <media-gfx/fontforge-20100501 in lilypond ebuilds is no good solution. I hope by adding a reference image (how the treble clef should look like), the problem becomes clearer.

I compiled lilypond 2.3.44 manually with current fontforge-20100501 and it works fine. So I think, there are several options:
- Put a warning inside 2.1.x ebuilds, that tells users to downgrade fontforge and recompile lilypond, if they experience font problems, like the broken treble clef, and wait for the stable release 2.14, which seems to be around the corner
- Add 2.13.44 (actually = 2.14beta3) to the tree. But mark 2.12.x as unstable? I don't really know...

Ok, now I see the problem. Let me think about it.

The link supplied by Georg Hennig in his original submission of this bug (see URL field above) is to a discussion of the issue at the Arch Forums. However, Arch also have a bug open for this, which is
also informative.

Arch Task 20991 [1] has patch for this, but it also mentions that "The LilyPond team is using a CVS snapshot of fontforge in order to work around these issues until a new version of fontforge is released". I see we have a 20110222 snapshot of fontforge in the Portage tree - it might be worth testing against this to see if the problem is fixed.

I haven't had a chance to test against media-gfx/fontforge-20110222 so I leave this as placeholder until I get a chance and a suggestion for anyone else experiencing this bug.

This is almost certainly fixed by lilypond-2.14.2 which is now in ~arch. Reopen if not.
