Since updating from xorg-server-1.7.7-r1 to xorg-server-1.9.2 the Compiz Wallpaper plugin has been broken. Instead of the various wallpapers, each workspace (monitor, excluding the main with KDE) has a plain black background. Same problem here - appeared yesterday after Xorg update. Running on amd64 stable (with some ~amd64 packages, and portage 2.2). I repacked compiz-plugins-extra-0.8.6.tar.bz2 (from distfiles) add from here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/629391/comments/14 copy *.ebuild in local/portage and #ebuild * manifest. complite ok Compiz Wallpaper plugin work ... ))

I also have this bug. My workaround is to disable the wallpaper plugin (and thus I get a plain, non-buggy background), and then use one of the old tools to set the X background (in my case, I used fbsetbg, which comes from fluxbox, and which calls wmsetbg from windowmaker). This workaround seems to work very well (but uses one wallpaper for all viewports).
I would try with 1.9.2.902 server version as this looks similar to: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20860
it works fine with recent xorg-server(1.11) and compiz(0.8.8), so i think this bug should be closed
