Description Lars 2010-12-25 12:45:51 UTC
i updated to xorg-server-1.9.2 yesterday (along with many other packages) and after restart today, my keyboard layout has switched back to english / us.

before the update everything worked fine and i did not change the configuration. parts of my config:
# cat /etc/hal/fdi/policy/use-german-layout.fdi
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
        <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keyboard">
                <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbLayout" type="string">de</merge>
                <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbVariant" type="string">deadgraveacute</merge>
                <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules" type="string">xfree86</merge>
                <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbModel" type="string">hp2505</merge>
        </match>
</deviceinfo>

from the xorg.conf :

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier     "Keyboard0"
    Driver         "evdev"
    Option         "XkbLayout" "de"
EndSection

i also checked if there is some new information on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml , but the section "Configuring Xorg" seems to be the same as back than when i read it for xorg-server-1.7.7 .

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
happens after reboot (i.e. hal and everything restarted)

Actual Results:
US keyboard layout is active

Expected Results:
German keyboard layout is active

Hi,

This is due to the hal support removal from xorg.
(furthermore, hal is to be removed completely soon, and default USE is now -hal)

The fix :
 - make sure you have at least 'evdev' in INPUT_DEVICES in your make.conf (this should be the case since xorg-server-1.5)
 - mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
 - create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf, containing

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        Driver "evdev"
	Option "xkb_layout" "<your_keyboard_layout>"
EndSection

...and as a sidenote, <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules"
type="string">xfree86</merge> was an invalid value.
Fortunately for you, evdev driver was ignoring that value.
(it's hardcoded to 'evdev' for this driver).
Comment 4 Lars 2010-12-25 18:53:57 UTC
thank you :-)

> xfree86 was an invalid value
sorry, the documentation was not very percise at this point. so i just copy & pasted what google gave me.

( i made a request to include the information of comment #1 right into the xorg howto -> https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349698 )
