Hi, This is due to the hal support removal from xorg. (furthermore, hal is to be removed completely soon, and default USE is now -hal) The fix : - make sure you have at least 'evdev' in INPUT_DEVICES in your make.conf (this should be the case since xorg-server-1.5) - mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d - create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf, containing Section "InputClass" Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall" MatchIsKeyboard "on" MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" Driver "evdev" Option "xkb_layout" "<your_keyboard_layout>" EndSection

...and as a sidenote, <merge key="input.x11_options.XkbRules" type="string">xfree86</merge> was an invalid value. Fortunately for you, evdev driver was ignoring that value. (it's hardcoded to 'evdev' for this driver).
