same here, but no gnome overlay and glib-2.27. downgrading gnome-panel to 2.30.2 solves the problem. Open a different bug report then
i'm sure its the same bug since i have the same logs with the same symptoms. i won't open new one until i'll be sure its other.
Then, try on a new created user account and, if still valid, attach ~/.xsession-errors file
can't test it now. not at affected system next few days.
i deleted all gnome/gtk related things from ~, ~/.config ~/.local and gnome-panel works fine again. i can't say exactly what was wrong.
(In reply to comment #9) > i deleted all gnome/gtk related things from ~, ~/.config ~/.local and > gnome-panel works fine again. > i can't say exactly what was wrong. > after ~/.gconf being deleted and startx, the panel shows up again!
People, please don't remove old config files, you can try to copy them to the new created user, see when it starts to fail again and, then, try to know what exact file is causing the problem. Does anybody still preserve any problematic configuration?
Also, if you were using quick-lounge-applet, you were probably suffering bug 348123
Is there anyone here still affected by the problem that can show up logs ?
Yes. I'm going to backup and move my .gconf directory, please let me know how to proceed to help debugging. I just downgraded to glib 2.26 and I encountered this bug.
Well, the first, obvious difference is that in the .gconf I moved there's no "panel" directory, while in the newly created one it's there, containing: drwx------ 8 xenon xenon 336 Dec 18 03:01 applets -rw------- 1 xenon xenon 0 Dec 18 03:01 %gconf.xml drwx------ 2 xenon xenon 80 Dec 18 03:02 general drwx------ 3 xenon xenon 112 Dec 18 03:02 objects drwx------ 4 xenon xenon 160 Dec 18 03:01 toplevels So it seems the differences in panel handling are pretty deep.
(In reply to comment #14) > Yes. I'm going to backup and move my .gconf directory, please let me know how > to proceed to help debugging. I just downgraded to glib 2.26 and I encountered > this bug. > The way I have proceed in similar situations in the past was the following: 1. My "pacho" account was broken. 2. I created a new "test" account with a new home, and it worked fine. 3. I started to copy subdirectories from my "pacho" home to the new "test" one. This is the longer phase as it will require to login multiple times to the new account for verifying when does it fail. 4. Then, once a subdirectory is located as the "culprit", I go to its subdirectories.
Ok, please forget my comment #15. It was 4AM here and apparently it's too late for debugging. :| I found the exact culprit now. In directory .gconf/desktop/gnome/interface, there was a file named %gconf.xml. By removing that, without touching anything else, I got my panel back (only loss was some icons I put in the top bar, but the vast majority was there). Here's the file contents: <?xml version="1.0"?> <gconf> <entry name="accessibility" mtime="1292629886" type="bool" value="true"/> <entry name="gtk_color_scheme" mtime="1290803584" type="string"> <stringvalue>fg_color:#919195959999 bg_color:#555557575353 text_color:#919195959999 base_color:#2e2e34343636 selected_fg_color:#7a7aa3a3cccc selected_bg_color:#3f3f40403d3d tooltip_fg_color:#000000000000 tooltip_bg_color:#f5f5f5f5b5b5</stringvalue> </entry> <entry name="icon_theme" mtime="1290803323" type="string"> <stringvalue>Foxtrot</stringvalue> </entry> <entry name="gtk_theme" mtime="1290803323" type="string"> <stringvalue>Darklooks</stringvalue> </entry> </gconf>
Nice, then, please open an upstream bug report: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gnome-panel In that one, attach the file causing the problem and also ~/.xsession-errors file while it's failing. Then, post here the link for allowing us to track the issue. Thanks a lot
