Description Ivan Ristic 2010-11-24 23:38:02 UTC
System hangs sometimes while startup after fsck.jfs cleaned the FS and there is
a message that /var/lib/init.d couldn't be accessed. You've been prompted to
type in the root password and to type in a command "mkdir -p /var/lib/init.d".
When trying to list the permission of this folder (init.d) with
"ls -al /var/lib/" the folder is there but there are only question signes
(p.e. ??? ??? ???) for each permission.

The reason for this error is the JFS FS.
Even if the system has been shutted down as usual over p.E. XFCE4 DE.
It'll be recovered as usual on startup but the problem still persists.
I also tried to re-install baselayout package but this doesn't help.

What helped is to proceed "fsck.jfs -pav /dev/{partition}".
After that i was able to start my system again.

Anyway this isn't a big issue but the error message is unusual and many unexperienced maintainer would consider it that the system is broken.

So this issue is in my eyes fixed but it would be nice what's the reason for
this issue. Could it be a case that i didn't unmount my dev folder after
chroot. Well so far is this only a workaround for this issue which i couldn't find in this Bugzilla nor on Internet.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
It's hard to reproduce, it happened twice in 3 months.

Expected Results:
The solution is just to force the fsck as usual
"fsck.jfs -fav /dev/{jfs-partition}".

My "emerge --info" output.
