Description merwan kashouty 2003-11-26 16:36:26 UTC
this just happened this morning when i booted my system.. i get a string of
failed to calculate dep messeges as each off the init processes is started and a
messege to run #/sbin/depscan.sh to correct the problem... running that as root
results in this.

JaiBaba root # /sbin/depscan.sh
 * Caching service dependencies...
bash: line 3404: syntax error near unexpected token `('
bash: line 3404: `  ELF
l4.4 ("444hx444
/lib/ld-linux.so.2GNU'
 * Can't find service 'checkroot' needed by 'crypto-loop'; continuing...
xtermxtermxterm *  Can't find service 'modules' needed by 'crypto-loop';
continuing...                                                         [ ok ]

JaiBaba root # xtermxtermxterm

i have no clue as to what caused this.... there were no major updates to world
... emerge log lists things like gaim gnomeprint and gnomeprintui... just normal
pkgs no system stuff....

these error messeges do not seem to effect the system itself... i am in it now
and have been all day but rather the just reinstalling gentoo i would like to
know what happened since this would seem to indicate some problem that could pop
up possibly for anyone.

i have run a file system check and done a revdep-rebuild.. no errors were found
, emerged baselayout again... i am unsure what to do next... help

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot the system
2.run /sbin/depscan.sh
3.
Comment 1 merwan kashouty 2003-11-28 08:14:21 UTC
just some -v info and a comment... i emerged -e system with no luck ... emerge finishes but the problem still remains . the new baselayout released yesterday didnt help... did find a thread in the forums that suggests similar troubles happening to others... http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=72778&highlight=depscan

please try this:
file /etc/init.d/*

you should only see:
a /sbin/runscript script text executable
ASCII English text
symbolic link to `../../sbin/<SOME FILE>'

if you see anything else (like binary files) please post the filenames of those files and the package that owns them (`qpkg -v -f /etc/init.d/FILE`)

Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2003-11-29 17:04:43 UTC
it is mostly normal, but like i said there is one that is wrong:
/etc/init.d/synclient: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

what does `qpkg -v -f /etc/init.d/synclient` show ?
Comment 5 merwan kashouty 2003-11-29 19:46:04 UTC
mmm qpkg -v -f /etc/init.d/synclient doesnt return anything
Comment 6 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2003-11-29 19:55:07 UTC
well then do you have any idea how it got there ? ;)

cause it shouldnt be there
Comment 7 merwan kashouty 2003-11-29 20:27:13 UTC
well i have no idea... something in portage i would guess since i never added any files to init.d myself... have you seen that file before?
Comment 8 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2003-11-29 20:42:00 UTC
nope :)
just rm that file and the bug will go away

if you happen to find out what package put that there could you please post ? :)
Comment 9 merwan kashouty 2003-11-29 21:16:15 UTC
well that did take care of half the problem.... but i still recieve an error at boot from every item in /etc/init.d ... cant get dependency info on <whatever>! run /sbin/depscan.sh to fix this....

and if i emerge a pkg i get this as it finishes

>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
 * Caching service dependencies...
bash: line 3455: syntax error: unexpected end of file
 * Can't find service 'checkroot' needed by 'crypto-loop'; continuing...
 *  Can't find service 'modules' needed by 'crypto-loop';  continuing...  [ ok ]>>> Auto-cleaning packages ...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

Comment 17 merwan kashouty 2003-12-11 10:31:54 UTC
thanks to seemant this is fixed... it was a cupsd.merged file in /etc/init.d that created all that output.. sorry for the trouble.
