Since media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera is becoming deprecated (see bug #282754), I am reviewing packages still depending on it for trying to make them depend on virtual/ttf-fonts or media-fonts/dejavu The problem with media-gfx/freewrl is that I think it really requires media-fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera and, then, if you are able to confirm that, could you ask upstream to think about moving to media-fonts/dejavu? Thanks a lot Reproducible: Always
I expect that freewrl will work with media-fonts/dejavu instead; will test and have the ebuild updated if it does.
..ok. So i did a test on my system with ttf-bitstream-vera removed and dejavu installed, and everything seems to work fine. HOWEVER, the Vera fonts are actually hard-coded, and so as far as I can tell it _should not_ be working. I'd like to hold off on OK'ing this until I can find out why, and possibly also patching the code upstream to be sure it's working properly. BTW, I reviewed bug #282754 and this doesn't seem to say that ttf-bitstream-vera is being deprecated, just that vera fonts are being virtualized...? Is ttf-bitstream-vera actually going to be removed from the tree?
It won't be removed (I think) but they are no longer developed and contains some unfixed bugs (I remember that I had to start using dejavu years ago because of some missing symbols), also, dejavu fonts *should* replace bitstream-vera... but looks that it's not as easy on some packages :-(
I've submitted a patch upstream that will provide support for fontconfig; my initial tests have shown it to work and if everything goes well, this would allow freewrl to depend on any outline font that provides sans, serif, and monotype faces. I'll close this bug (or ask Patrick to do it) as soon as the next release occurs.
Great :-O, thanks a lot for your work
freewrl was converted to using fontconfig as of the 1.22.10 release; closing bug.
