Description Chuck Wegrzyn 2010-06-18 23:32:07 UTC
First, I'm not sure if this is a KDE bug or something else, but it manifest itself by KDE logging me off and dumping me back at the KDM login screen. So this seems a good place to start.

I did a new, complete install of Linux,X and KDE per the handbook and current documentation. When I installed X I got it running with TWM, without a hitch. I then installed the latest KDE (kde-meta, 4.4.4).

When I login via KDM, I get to KDE without a hitch. When I minimize an application - and I've only done it on a few - and click on the toolbar to restore it, I get logged off!

I originally thought I screwed something up, and completely reinstalled Linux, X and KDE just to make sure. It happened a second time!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Linux per Gentoo documentation.
2. Install X per documentation.
3. Install KDE per documentation.
4. Login to your KDE account.
5. Open up browser and minimize it.
6. Click minimized browser in toolbar....watch you logged off.

Actual Results:
You get logged off!

I have noticed the following messages in /var/log/messages (which don't show up until KDE is run!):

Jun 18 19:17:04 oblena kernel: [drm] Resetting GPU

A few more oddities:

1) I noticed on the build of xorg-server it was complaining about udev and hal both being selected. It said it was ignoring hal and using the udev flag.

2) I also noticed when I attempt to log out the KDM login screen doesn't reappear (I have to do an "xdm restart" to get it. In the messages file I get the following:

Jun 18 20:00:46 oblena kdm: :0[6816]: pam_unix(kde:session): session closed for user cwegrzyn
Jun 18 20:00:46 oblena kernel: [drm] Resetting GPU
Jun 18 20:00:46 oblena kdm[28725]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Jun 18 20:00:46 oblena kdm[28725]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: [drm] Setting GART location based on new memory map
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: [drm] Loading RV635 CP Microcode
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: platform r600_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/RV635_pfp.bin
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: platform r600_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/RV635_me.bin
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: [drm] Resetting GPU
Jun 18 20:02:31 oblena kernel: [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs
Jun 18 20:02:35 oblena kdm: :0[7146]: pam_unix(kde:session): session opened for user cwegrzyn by (uid=0)

BTW, I don't have an xorg.conf defined - when I did a startx after installing xorg-server, along with twm and xterm, xclose and xsm I got the window displayed! This is per the X installation documentation.

One last thing. I've noticed those messages from the dbus-demon now include other components of the system. For example:

Comment 4 Chuck Wegrzyn 2010-06-19 03:24:39 UTC
I verified the problem is in the KDE code (somewhere). I loaded both XFCE and Gnome on the system and both work without any problems.
Comment 5 Hugo Mildenberger 2010-06-19 07:55:45 UTC
Are you using xorg-server-1.8.1.901? And could you also attach Xorg.0.log? For me it sounds like http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320055. Just try to disable compositing, or switch to compositing via XRender to see if KDE runs stable then.
Comment 6 Chuck Wegrzyn 2010-06-19 10:14:36 UTC
Thanks man for the xorg-server tip. In fact that was exactly the problem - I was using xorg-server 1.8.1.901! When I downgraded to 1.8.0 the problem went away. It seems I was having the exact same problem as listed in the bug you referenced.

Once again my sincere thanks! You are what makes Gentoo a great distro and experience!

Hmm, how is "KDE 4.4.4 Unstable" related to the "New YAMMI available" bug? :-)
Comment 9 Chuck Wegrzyn 2010-06-19 11:33:57 UTC
Sorry...somehow I was supposed to enter 32055 and instead seem to have got it tagged to this bug!

It's a duplicate of bug #320055 (not 32055)
