Description Jean-Pierre de la Croix (jdelacroix) 2010-05-19 19:44:29 UTC
After updating from x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.0 to x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.1(-r1), KDE (and X) will crash when using kwin with OpenGL rendering for the desktop effects whenever certain actions are taken. One such action is minimizing and un-minimizing any application. Also, switching from OpenGL rendering to XRandr and back to OpenGL rendering will crash KDE and X.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade from x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.0 to x11-base/xorg-server-1.8.1(-r1)
2. Start KDE, use desktop effects with OpenGL rendering
3. Minimize and then un-minimize any application.

Actual Results:
X server restarts and the user is back at the KDM login manager. All work is lost.

Expected Results:
Applications should properly un-minimize and the user should still be able to use the application without the X server restarting.

A "workaround" is to use XRandr for the desktop effect, which is unfortunately slow. Disabling the desktop effects also prevents X from crashing.

Downgrading x11-base/xorg-server from 1.8.1(-r1) to 1.8.0 will also "fix" the problem, which suggests that this bug is tied to this newer version of X.

It is also important to note, that this error occurs on a machine using the xf86-video-ati / radeon drivers for 3D acceleration.

I have the same problem here.
two questions however:
1) Is this a duplicate of Bug#:320055
2) Could this be related to Bug#:320689, I don't have scim installed, but the problem seems similar and I wonder if they are connected somehow.

Yes, I noticed that the bug had been reopened. I'll mark this one as a duplicate, but I don't think that the crashes are random, but rather have to do with certain compositing actions performed by kwin with OpenGL rendering.
