The only purpose of media-libs/libpng-1.2.43-r3 (more precisely the :1.2 slot packages) is that binary-only packages don't break (because they cannot be recompiled against libpng-1.4). It seems like you installed libpng-1.4 and libpng:1.2 in parallel but didn't recompile all non-binary-only packages against libpng-1.4. One solution to get rid of this problem is to unmerge libpng:1.2 and then run revdep-rebuild -i -- --keep-going Don't interrupt revdep-rebuild even if there are packages failing to recompile. Just wait till revdep-rebuild finished and then run the same command again.
Q.1: Why do both libpng-1.2 and libpng-1.4 install libpng12.so.0? Q.2: If so, how will unmerging libpng:1.2 get rid of that file? Q.3: Why does ld not find -lpng12 even though a file of the correct name exists? I'll try the remerge later when I'm back and have time...
