Description Andrew 2010-04-04 19:53:12 UTC
slim.conf uses:
login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
instead of:
login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session

This means a users local ~/.xinitrc is ignored by default.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -av slim
2. set DISPLAYMANAGER="slim" in /etc/conf.d/xdm
3. rc-update add xdm default
4. Modify ~/.xinitrc with something like "exec dwm" or "exec fluxbox"
5. reboot
6. Login to slim using your username and password
Actual Results:
The xinitrc from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is used rather than the user supplied xinitrc. Since I didn't have twm and other packages installed, I got an unusable X.

Expected Results:
The software should have used my local xinitrc

Comment 3 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2010-04-05 02:10:58 UTC
It is an acceptable default now because users should always have a /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file from x11-apps/xinit but they are NOT guaranteed to have ~/.xinitrc file. Do note, that the path is commented out so users have a hint for what to do.
