I try with compiz-0.8.6 and different version of mesa (7.7.1 and 7.8) and xf86-video-intel (2.10.0-r1 and 2.11.0). When I change version of mesa or xf86-video-intel I recomplile x11-libs/libdrm media-libs/mesa x11-base/xorg-server x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel. And only with =x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.10.0-r1 compiz starts successfully. With =media-libs/mesa-7.8 I have some graphic artifacts.
Why has this bug been closed? Victor has reported success with xf86-video-intel-2.10 while the bug is with 2.11 - ans so far nobody has reported success with 2.11.

The problem is not limited to compiz. On an ~x86 system, I have the same kernel error with KDE 4.4. With the current ~x86 packages, I get this when shutting X down: ---- rm_intel_gem_bo_unreference_locked_timed: Assertion `((&bo_gem->refcount)->atomic) > 0' failed ---- The ddx then leaves the whole display in a completely unusable state: cannot switch console (even when logging remotely via SSH and doing chvt 1), black screen with only a cursor at the top left of the screen. Masking >=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 works fine, that is, xf86-video-intel-2.10-r1 works fine.
I too solved lockup problems like that just reported by Francis by downgrading to 2.10.0-r1. I'm not sure it is relevant, but it is interesting that the Intel Open source developers recommend that the development version of cairo (1.9.6) be used with xf86-video-intel-2.11. Did not crash with the same error but froze nevertheless after some time.
newer versions of kernel, mesa, libdrm and xf86-video-intel are now become stable ... any improvement ?
I currently run x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.14.0 and the latest kernel (2.6.38) and compiz is working fine even on a dual screen (albeit slow in that case)
