As ubuntu bug goes, sys-apps/usb_modeswitch-1.1.1 might be a better solution.
The launchpad bug has been closed: Martin Pitt wrote on 2010-03-30: #24 modem-modeswitch was obsoleted upstream, so please install usb-modeswitch as indicated in the previous comments.
