Description awtand 2010-03-07 19:23:45 UTC
I was trying to print a plot, but the printer wouldn't do anything, it just stood idle. Reverting back to octave-3.0.3, and it works again. However I need octave 3.2.4 because it allows me to execute a command that is not available on octave 3.0.3.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =sci-mathematics/octave-3.2.4
2. octave
3. try to plot anything
4. print

Actual Results:
Nothing would print.
Printer stood idle.

Expected Results:
A print of plot supposed to come out of printer.

I couldn't reproduce the error. Both printing to printer and savin figure to file worked without any problems. Below is my emerge --info:

I thought the problem would be gone when 3.2.4 hit stable recently, but it persists.

Could it be the change in /usr/share/octave/3.2.4/m/plot/print.m is causing the problem?

I was trying to compare both files and although I couldn't interpret the changes, but it appears that the new print.m had omitted a lot of lines; therefore, I suspect that the particular file is the culprit behind my problem.

I'm going to attempt to employ the old print.m from 3.0.3 on 3.2.4 to see if I could regain the printing capability.

Apparently, it didn't work.

After trial & error, I managed to identify the problem, and I performed a simple edit on print.m to regain the printing capability.
FROM
if (doprint)
      if (isunix ())
        prn_opt = "l";
TO
if (doprint)
      if (isunix ())
        prn_opt = "";

It appears that "lpr -l" command is broken on my system. I attempted to reinstall both cups & foo2zjs, and it failed to fix the problem. Another thing that showed up is the page scaling issue, the plot is no longer stretched to the sides when I tried to print on landscape mode. It didn't happen before on 3.0.3, so I guess the culprit is either new print.m file or lpr.

I guess, I could say that the problem is fixed. In case anyone is having the same problem, you might want to try what I did. In conclusion, "lpr -l" might not work with cups. Someone from octave mailing list has been proposing a new solution that might address this problem in the future release.
