Description Seerp 2010-02-25 22:40:07 UTC
After upgrading ruby to 1.8.7_p249, the gui version of rubyripper (rrip_gui) is very slow in general and, most importantly, stops working after displaying "Analyzing files for mismatching chunks" message in the status window.

Here "stops working" means that I've let it running for an hour without it finishing, all this time using 0% of the cpu.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Having ruby-1.8.7_p249 installed, try to rip any cd using rubyripper.

Actual Results:
After ripping the first track twice, rubyripper stops working while comparing the two rips.

Expected Results:
It should work like intended.

After downgrading to ruby to 1.8.6_p388 everything works fine again.

I also think it used to work fine with the earlier 1.8.7 builds, 1.8.7_p174 for example. However these builds are not in portage any more so I cannot check this.

emerge --info returns

Portage 2.1.7.17 (default/linux/amd64/10.0/no-multilib, gcc-4.4.3-asneeded, glibc-2.11-r1, 2.6.32-gentoo-r7 x86_64)

Comment 1 Daniel Pielmeier gentoo-dev 2010-07-09 20:48:08 UTC
I can reproduce this issue, but here rubyripper is just slow. It seems to take very long for comparing the tracks (Analyzing files for mismatching chunks) and there is also a long pause after that and before converting the wav files to the chosen encoded format. Ruby is using some CPU during the slow phases though. This happens for both ruby-1.8.7_p249 and ruby-1.8.7_p299. A downgrade to ruby-1.8.6_p388 fixes the problem and ruby-1.8.7_p174-r1 should work too.

There is also an upstream bug [1] about this issue where a comment says it is fixed in ruby-1.9.
I can not test ruby-1.9.1_p429 as I experience bug #327051 and using -O0 or -O1 in CFLAGS does not fix the issue for me.

@ruby-team: It would be nice if someone of you can comment on this issue. If there is nothing you can do about just remove yourself from CC.

Comment 2 Hans de Graaff gentoo-dev Security 2010-07-10 07:26:31 UTC
This is most likely caused by changes in threading behaviour. Upstream is aware of those, but part of the incompatible changes where needed to fix other bugs. I guess the 1.9.1 version threading implementation is more robust and thus won't trigger this bug.
Comment 3 yago sanyago 2011-03-21 16:40:24 UTC
I got the same problem, but i tried to rip using the cli
and it works fine
Comment 4 Daniel Pielmeier gentoo-dev 2011-10-16 19:54:33 UTC
I just committed rubyripper-0.6.1 which fixes the issue for me. Please test!
Comment 5 Seerp 2011-10-17 20:08:12 UTC
That's good news!

Unfortunately I cannot test as I do not have a gentoo machine with optical drive anymore.
Comment 6 Daniel Pielmeier gentoo-dev 2011-10-22 22:11:39 UTC
I think it is okay to close this one for now. If anybody still has performance issues please reopen.
