When I run "users-admin", I get (users-admin:986): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Launcher could not run (out of memory) There is plenty of memory on the system. I reemerged liboobs, and then gnome-system-tools and system-tools-backends. There was an error in doing this with xml-parser which I emerged, and then the rest emerged just fine. what changed recently on your system ? Is system-tools-backends started with the init script at default runlevel, is the daemon running, ... Please be a bit more descriptive. Also please note that optimization levels above -O2 are not supported by gnome team and upstream. Please make sure you can reproduce the issue with basic CFLAGS (march -O2), rebuilding glib, dbus and dbus-glib at the minimum.
what changed recently on your system ? I'm not sure if perl-5.10.1:0 was recent, but because of a terrible mess up with spamassassin and amavisd, I had lots of perl modules that had to be re-emerged. I keep up to date with an amd64~ system, so it might be something else added to portage recently. Sorry I can't be more specific. Is system-tools-backends started with the init script at default runlevel, is the daemon running? Yes to both. I never use more than -O2 optimization. I'll try re-emerging glib, dbus, and dbus-glib, although I think all but dbus-glib have been emerged recently. I'll post here if a re-emerge of these fixes things, but I really doubt it.
I have emerged what I said I would and restarted dbus. The error looks the same.
Sorry, my response was to hasty. The error message has changed. Is is now: users-admin:1445): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success I had an error like this here http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301791, but whatever got that going is not doing the job now. (I already have my user and root in the messagebus group.
it looks like a lot of people are having problems with the default permissions on dbus-launcher-helper these days. I wonder where this comes from. Moving to fdo. Could you do a ls -l of /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper ?
# ls -l /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper -rwxr-x--- 1 root messagebus 47328 Feb 15 14:32 /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper* But I have also tried chmod a+rx ... with not effect.
that's not normal, it should be rwsr-x---
I probably did this while trying to find something that would work. I deleted the file re-emerged dbus, restarted dbus, added group read permissions so that ls -l displays as you suggested. The result is the same as it was. It must be something more than just permissions. Thanks.
I'm having this issue too. Any fix or ideas so far? Hi there! I'm the gnome-system-tools maintainer upstream, and I'm currently debugging the same problem in Ubuntu[1]. Would you open a new report on bugzilla.gnome.org so that we can work more deeply on this? Thanks! More generally, instructions to help debugging the gst are at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGnomeSystemTools Hope this can help. 1: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/574078
I tried to open a gnome-bugzilla account, but got no response. (In reply to comment #14) > Are you still able to reproduce with 2.30? > Problem is still there, I'm running gnome-system-tools-2.30.2. I just looked at comment 12, and followed the suggestions there. The users-admin log just reported what I've been seeing on the console, namely, (users-admin:2754): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success The stb-users.log was more interesting. begin::Start of work report. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [uname]. file_run_pipe_success::Piping command [LC_ALL=C /bin/uname -s 2> /dev/null |] for reading. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [usermod]. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [userdel]. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [useradd]. file_locate_tool_failed::Couldn't find tool [adduser]. file_locate_tool_failed::Couldn't find tool [deluser]. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [chfn]. file_locate_tool_failed::Couldn't find tool [pw]. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [passwd]. file_locate_tool_success::Found tool [chpasswd]. no introspection data available for method 'getPlatform' in object '/org/freedesktop/SystemToolsBackends/Platform', and object is not cast to any interface at /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.1/x86_64-linux/Net/DBus/RemoteObject.pm line 334. Perhaps fixing that would fix the problem or maybe there is more to it.
I too get the same errors. The entire gnome-system-tools package is broke (users-admin, network-admin, services-admin, etc): # users-admin (users-admin:12202): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Launcher could not run (out of memory) # network-admin (network-admin:12213): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Launcher could not run (out of memory) # services-admin (services-admin:12224): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Launcher could not run (out of memory) Suggestions?
Could it be? I remerged dev-perl/XML-Twig after getting an error while trying to follow the g-s-t debug instructions and now things are working? (Or almost, i think there is an unrelated bug to network-admin, looks more like a specific gentoo issue). But my initial bug of not even being able to run the apps is no longer there. Can anyone confirm?

I've successfully run perl-cleaner --reallyall. I have upgraded to gnome-system-tools-2.32.0. The error I get when running users-admin has changed to: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gnomebreakpad": libgnomebreakpad.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings will not be saved or shared with other applications. (users-admin:3348): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success I guessing the real problem is not connected with http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341473 which has to do with the first part of the error message. Perhaps there is something else I should try?
Still failing in the same way. After installing gcc-4.5.2, I've done an emerge -e world, and run perl-cleaner --reallyall. I'm using: gnome-system-tools-2.32.0, system-tools-backends-2.10.1, and liboobs-2.32.0. Thanks for the > tip! This unmerge and merge did nothing to help me. I'm still getting (users-admin:1334): Liboobs-WARNING **: There was an unknown error communicating with the backends: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success
After "chmod o+x /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper", I get this to launch. It appears to work, although there is nothing I need to change at the moment.
