http://gparted.sourceforge.net/news.php has a news post "17 November 2009 : Ensure Parted 1.9.0 is patched if using with GParted" that says that you should you the patch at http://git.debian.org/?p=parted/parted.git;a=commit;h=ad25892bb995f61b0ddf801ed1f74e0b1e7390ce if you need gparted

"Update 2010-02-26:  A patch has been committed to the Parted project git repository to work around this problem.  See Parted Patch - linux: add wait time and retries to kernel partition reread.  This patch is included in the Parted 2.2 release."

This has really been a major bug. I recommend to make either my 1.9.0-r1 or 2.2 stable.

There has never been a 1.9.0-r1 in the tree. 2.2 stabilisation progress will be tracked in bug #316453.
