Description Mark Nowiasz 2010-02-10 15:39:35 UTC
When using the comic applet on the desktop, the next time you start a session (for example after logging out and in) KDE 4.4 hangs - just the splash screen is showing. If you click on the background a black background will show up.

The only way to recover is to manually edit $HOME/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc and remove the comic related entries.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add the comic applet to your desktop, use (for example) userfriendly
2. Logout/Login
3. KDE 4.4 hangs

Confirm. Plasma also freezes here when adding the widget to the desktop.
Comment 2 Nate Weibley 2010-02-11 15:40:37 UTC
Confirmed, however plasma was working for me for a while with the comic plasmoid from my KDE 4.3.5 config.

I don't believe the problem started until I modified my desktop configuration (moved the task-panel to the bottom of my screen) at which point the hangups happened.

If you have terminal mapped to a keyboard shortcut you can open one up and type:
killall -9 plasma-desktop
plasma-desktop

Oddly this does start plasma with the comic plasmoid.

I will look into it later today if nobody else finds anything.

Comment 4 Nate Weibley 2010-02-11 16:36:00 UTC
It appears that this is actually a bug with Nepomuk.

Unsurprisingly I was messing around with nepomuk the night this crash started for me. I'm curious: Mark & Torsten, are you using virtuoso-2.4.0 as a backend for Akonadi/Nepomuk?
Comment 5 Nate Weibley 2010-02-11 16:45:35 UTC
Nevermind, soprano is definite at fault.
See here:
http://soprano.sourceforge.net/node/43
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=226218
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=226154

Upgrading to soprano-2.4.0.1 fixes the problem. Will submit a bug to request the bumped ebuild.
