What's the output of `grep VersionsUrls ~/.config/Eric4/eric4.ini` ?
VersionsUrls=@Variant(\0\0\0\x7f\0\0\0\xePyQt_PyObject\0\0\0\0\0) after updating to 4.4.6 the problem persists.

That was just a workaround. performVersionCheck() wrongly assumes that there's at least one valid entry in VersionsUrls. A proper code fix is needed, which means reporting the bug upstream.
