Last month, there where more packages listed than this month. Does the number 
of packages really decrease or is there a problem with the website?

Theses are the figures of the package numbers that I am tracking for a few 
months:

2003-03-06.11-17-52	Total number of packages available: 3727
2003-04-14.18-52-24	Total number of packages available: 3963
2003-05-06.14-02-34	Total number of packages available: 4136
2003-06-02.08-36-22	Total number of packages available: 4318
2003-07-01.08-56-31	Total number of packages available: 4652
2003-08-04.10-17-27	Total number of packages available: 5027
2003-09-01.09-34-15	Total number of packages available: 6033
2003-10-01.10-50-58	Total number of packages available: 5444

for a period of time there we were counting ~arch masked packages in the
total count, though only stable packages are displayed on the web site.
