Description Michael Roberts 2010-01-06 22:33:34 UTC
Using versions 0.7.1 of networkmanager and nm-applet works great with my iwlagn4965 wireless network. Upgraded to latest stable version 0.7.2 and I no longer am able to get any wireless network connections (wired still works).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade to networkmanager and nm-applet 0.7.2
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Wireless network fails to come up, syslog is written with

Jan 5 17:11:58 gondor kernel: wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:1c:b0:ea:a0:31 try 1

every second or so.

Expected Results:
Working wireless connection.

Same problem here, networkmanager-0.7.1-r6 works.

what version of wpa_supplicant are you running with 0.7.2?

Whatever is in stable amd64:

[ebuild R ] net-wireless/wpa_supplicant-0.6.9 USE="dbus readline ssl -debug -eap-sim -fasteap -gnutls -madwifi (-ps3) -qt3 -qt4 -wps" 0 kB
Comment 7 Robert Piasek (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-02-01 15:40:30 UTC
could you please try wpa_supplicant 0.7.1 and let me know if that fixes it? If it does we will stabilise it asap.
Comment 8 Michael Roberts 2010-02-01 21:36:01 UTC
Now I can't even build networkmanager-0.7.2 anymore. The configure process fails:

I got around my XML::Parser issue by reinstalling it. Not sure what happened there as I've never upgraded perl.

I can confirm that all is working with networkmanager-0.7.2 and wpa_supplicant-0.7.1. I had to use my old dbus configuration for nm-applet because the new one doesn't support plugdev group access, but that's the only issue I see.

I have wpa_supplicant-0.7.1 and networkmanager-0.7.2 and it is not working for me. When I look in the KDE configuration, the Wireless tab is unavailable.

When using cnetworkmanager --ap I get no results at all. Connecting to a network I know is there does not work.

Perhaps there are configuration files somewhere that do not play nice between NM versions?

Downgrading to NM 0.7.1 instantly restores the functionality in KDE and cnetworkmanager.

To answer my own question: I found a file in /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state which was not replaced if I restarted NM. The contents said that "NetworkingEnabled=false" which I reckoned was not a good thing.
So I stopped NM 0.7.2, removed the file and started NM 0.7.2 again.

The file was recreated instantly and immediately my wifi came back up.

Perhaps this is a weird glitch on my system or perhaps the file had the wrong permissions but removing NetworkManager.state did the trick for me.

Comment 12 Martin Gebert 2010-04-11 13:55:23 UTC
networkmanager-0.7.2 is now working here, too, for some unknown reason. I still use wpa_supplicant-0.6.9. /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state had an old date but didn't seem to be the reason for the problem; also the behaviour didn't change after removing it.
So this issue seems to be mysteriously solved.

It seems there's nothing else we can do in this bug.

I would recommend updating your version to 0.8.1 as it brings many new features and fixes a lot of bugs.
