Description Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2010-01-05 10:14:20 UTC
net-voip/twinkle needs qt3. Upstream has stated in their roadmap that they are planning to release a qt4 version, but the porting effort is in its early stages. No estimate when it will be finished.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Please, leave twinkle in Portage. There aren't alternative SIP clients based on QT in Portage currently.
Comment 2 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2010-03-09 13:35:57 UTC
There is Qt based wengophone, but it suffers from security issues of internal libraries (bug 251575). I have been meaning to add qutecom (bug 237941) but I am reluctant to do this before an official release exists.

Regarding removal of twinkle, it cannot remain in the tree because qt-3 will go.

But Qutecom is _NOT_ in Portage currently and we want an alternative to the removed package now. So, please, add Qutecom to Portage as soon as possible (I think a Release Candidate version might be enough "stable" to ~x86) or the closest Twinkle alternative (any Voip client based on QT4).

Jaime, thanks for the Qutecom suggestion. I may look at it - if its not too ugly to maintain I may add it. In the mean time feel free to email the twinkle author asking for a Qt4 release.

Twinkle includes a nice command-line client and can be build without Qt.
Comment 6 Florian Mickler 2010-03-18 10:37:44 UTC
is it possible to get an ebuild for that? would be nice.

provide an ebuild and I'll commit it.

I couldn't get it to work without qt in the limited time I had available.

You fucking retards just gave me no choice but to stop using Gentoo.

There is no viable alternative voip client and I require this to do my job - no more gentoo for me - ever.

What a waste.

I can understand you're upset. But this kind of language is unacceptable. I am therefore reporting you to User Relations, asking them to take appropriate action.

I really can understand that removing a fully functional and mature application from gentoo is a kind of waste. And i share your anger.

But this is so not the tone. After all it is more the fault of qt for breaking backwards compatibility and upstream (twinkle) for not doing the minimum forwardporting and instead wanting to redesign the application then gentoo.

plz put blame were blame belongs...

The user has been banned from Bugzilla by the User Relations team.

But it does not support encryption at all. QuteCom supports encryption only partially and in non-standard way, thus you can exchange keys only between qutecom clients; sflphone supports encryption, but does not provide video support at all and fails to work with compicated NATs even using STUN, whilst linphone works well in this conditions. The same for ekiga... Unfortunately I can't find full replacement for skype since twinkle is goner now...

But IMO qt3 removal was very premature. Even Fedora 14 still supports it because there are too many barely or unreplaceable applications.

Closing this bug as there are some alternatives (Qutecom, sflphone, Ekiga) and I don't think twinkle will resurrect soon.
