I believe it should be filed under media-libs.

This ebuild also fails to install the docs.

Okay, this looks alright.  You didn't package the docs again, though, as you say.

I'm going to commit this, pending a little investigation.  I am not sure how
kosher it is to rely on the default src_compile function.  My main concern is:
would the ebuild fail to merge is compilation in the default function does not
complete successfully.

Personally, I'd prefer an explicit src_compile.  I'll start a thread in -dev on
this.
