Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2009-12-19 18:09:03 UTC
I get:
$ xboard
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
  Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)
  Serial number of failed request: 12
  Current serial number in output stream: 13

If it requires a font to be present on the system, it should depend on it or use a different (and more common) font by default (or maybe fallback to a different one)

Thanks

You can specify whatever font you want on the command-line. There's no reason to force a specific font to be installed. ... and Helvetica *is* pretty common.

It doesn't seem to be that common on a gnome desktop system :-/, what ebuild should install that fonts?

Thanks for the info

font-adobe has a helvetica font for example, which is pulled in by x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4-r1

I don't have xorg-x11 installed, it explains the problem then. But, please, take care that xorg-x11 is only a meta package that installs _optional_ xorg related packages also, as can be seen in:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=291421

then, I think that you shouldn't think that "commonly" that font is installed. What about simply adding a "elog" message suggesting font-adobe installation or running xboard with "-font" parameter?

I think that it could satisfy most of people :-)

Thanks a lot

I'm really interested in an example of such a command line b/c I made the experience that w/o a minimal xorg.conf (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-808987-highlight-.html) xboard never ever starts due to the mentioned error.
