Comment 2 Lennart Kolmodin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-12 20:23:52 UTC
Looking at the buildlog we can see that frown itself builds, but the test fails miserably.
First of all, they depend on hugs, which is not a dependency of frown, nor should it be IMHO as it's another haskell compiler than the one we preferably use.

Basically it runs frown on some input, and expects some known output.
That output is tied to a specific hugs version.

I've been trying to reformat the output into dev-lang/ghc output, by modifying the TestFrown.lhs application, although it is nontrivial.
When doing so actually most test cases works, but not all of them. Even with my attempt to fix the expected output, Frown generates code that sometimes simply does not compile (incorrect code, can't ever have worked) and thus it can't even run the test case.

Moreover, it hasn't been updated since 2005.
I'll try to get an idea of how popular this package is... if upstream can't fix it I'd vote that we simply remove frown.
Comment 3 Lennart Kolmodin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-13 11:00:01 UTC
Revised, the "incorrect" code was part of the test case.
Seems the test suite is just outdated, but the tests are still correct.
When trying to use ghc instead of hugs on a part of the test suite all broken tests were due to different syntax in ghc's output. Thus Frown itself seems ok.

Upstream will try to fix things during Christmas.
Comment 4 Sergei Trofimovich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-12-11 20:13:41 UTC
Closing as FIXED, but in reality default 'make test' is overriden by
'./setup test', which does nothing and does not fail.
