To me it sounds optional so why not add a flag for it? If not make it depend on net-libs/libntlm otherwise it will result in 

xchat: error while loading shared libraries: libntlm.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

from ldd after installing net-libs/libntlm

libntlm.so.0 => /usr/lib/libntlm.so.0 (0x00007f70665db000)
