Description Jim Faulkner 2009-11-08 21:08:46 UTC
klibido is segfaulting at startup. I had just depcleaned db-4.5 and rebuilt klibido against db-4.7. Doesn't appear to be a database corruption issue since when I run it as a user with no klibido configuration, it still segfaults. There's some discussion of this issue (and possible other KDE3 app issues) here:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-722468-highlight-klibido.html

Here's some kernel output from several attempts at running klibido:

I'll follow up with some strace output.

klibido strace output
Comment 2 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-11-08 22:09:15 UTC
Thanks for reporting. Based on this report I've committed 2 possible replacements to Portage from here, http://www.kde-apps.org/?xcontentmode=233

net-nntp/nzb (Qt4)
net-nntp/kwooty (KDE4)

Can you please try them out and report back if they fill the task this app used to?
Comment 3 Jim Faulkner 2009-11-10 01:11:36 UTC
I actually don't use klibido as an NZB downloader, which is the only thing that net-nntp/nzb and net-nntp/kwooty can do. What klibido excels at is viewing very large newsgroups (e.g. more than 10,000,000 articles). I use net-nntp/pan for most of my newsgroup browsing, but all the newsreaders I've tried so far, including pan, cannot handle very large newsgroups without crashing or consuming all of the system's memory.

OK, that wasn't clear in the initial message. Still don't regret committing the downloaders, good to have them around. :)

That's too bad, since klibido is "dead" and only for kdelibs-3. Try to find a suitable replacement and let me know about it so I can add it to portage.

Meanwhile, asking treecleaners to remove klibido from tree as non-working.
Comment 5 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-12-01 09:58:47 UTC
And it's gone. Also, kwooty was just bumped to 0.2.0.
