( At this point, emerge hangs indefinitely. I tried leaving it alone for a while and have tried restarting it as well, without any change in behaviour. To illustrate:

kream@satori ~ $ genlop -t --current

 Currently merging 9 out of 10

 * www-client/chromium-4.0.236.0

       current merge time: 3 hours, 31 minutes and 12 seconds.
       ETA: any time now.
kream@satori ~ $

And for comparison,
kream@satori ~ $ genlop -t chromium
 * www-client/chromium

     Tue Oct 20 13:47:42 2009 >>> www-client/chromium-4.0.222.6_p28888

     Thu Oct 22 15:31:43 2009 >>> www-client/chromium-4.0.223.5
       merge time: 33 minutes and 24 seconds.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2009-11-12 10:58:36 UTC
Is it the same with 4.0.240.0?

They could have added some heavy debug informations in recent versions, which may be triggered by -ggdb in your CFLAGS
Comment 2 Aniruddha Shankar 2009-11-16 09:51:33 UTC
well, I don't know about .240 but it's the same for 4.0.248.0, even after I removed -ggdb *and* ccache from CFLAGS and FEATURES.

emerged with the -d flag (emerge -vd chromium) and it gave the same result.

Any suggestions on how to narrow down the problem?
Comment 5 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2009-11-17 17:05:58 UTC
So it's not debug cflags, it's not ccache, ... And I suppose this is the only package exhibiting this behavior?

Can you try with MAKEOPTS=-j1, and when it hangs check the system state (outputs from top, free, df, ...). Then you could check what the process is doing with `strace -p <pid>`
Comment 6 Aniruddha Shankar 2009-11-21 17:12:22 UTC
thanks, your suggestions helped a lot. a pstree revealed that emerge was hanging with svn being called.

the problem was that I had apr built with debug info - that caused svn to spew out tons of debug information when svn was run.

please refer to bug 293962 and mark this one fixed. thanks!
Comment 7 Aniruddha Shankar 2009-11-21 17:13:24 UTC
echo dev-libs/apr -debug >> /etc/portage/package.use; emerge apr subversion; emerge chromium
Comment 8 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2009-11-21 17:49:39 UTC
Interesting, glad you found the problem!
