Summary says it all. I don't know if you can/should install perf with a mismatched kernel version (is there an ABI?), but if the kernel source is 2.6.31 (I use vanilla, but I would be surprised if it's changed in gentoo-sources) then the feature uses the "old" name perf counters. Perf events is a new name only in 2.6.32 (currently in its fourth rc, with the fifth rc, rc6, long overdue). The mentioned version of perf is not in the tree anymore. Does this problem still exist?
The version of dev-util/perf has to match the running kernel pretty closely. A newer perf won't compile if you're using 2.6.30 kernel. This is expected and I'm closing this bug as invalid.
