I'm using gfortran with ddd. If I have a variable displayed (in the data window) and right click on it, X crashes. The mouse moves, but the mouse buttons and keyboard are dead. Please run nvidia-bug-report.sh and attach that info. Additionally, going back in xorg-server version fixes it or does going back in nvidia-drivers version fix it?
Created attachment 209110 [details] The nvidia-bug-report.log.gz that was requested This problem arose has a result of upgrading xorg-server and nvidia-drivers. My understanding is that the version of xorg-server requires the latest nvidia-drivers so I don't see what is to be gained by trying the earlier one. And going back to an earlier xorg-server is almost certainly going to work and would be a pain to do.
Created attachment 209239 [details] output of v 'valgrind ddd' I am experiencing the same problem. The attached valgrind output shows that the the problem seems to be triggered after a call to _XmTextSetCursorPosition from libXm (motif). One should also consider the possibility of bug in libXm.
The problem is not in motif for sure. I found out today that also get a server crash when I run gv (the ghostscript front-end). I vote for a bug in the nvidia driver.
There is some evidence that a patch to xorg-server fixes problems people are having. See http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=6044007#6044007, where the following is said So crashes solved by applying this patch from Fedora:http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2117519&postcount=34 http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=139777
I confirm that this patch fixes the crash issue. However, I noted the following comment in reference to it: "This patch sadly introduces big problem to kde 4.3.3 anyhow: alt+f2 (quick launcher for apps), lancelot menu, grouped tasks. Each of them goes to super slow motion mode. When i press ctlr+f2 it takes around five seconds to get dialog appear. As well those menus do same." I can confirm that alt-f2 is, after applying the patch, *very* slow. This is an annoyance, but I can live with that.
Re-assigning the x11 herd since they need to fix xorg-server

Fedora's bug for this; https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=524244
(In reply to comment #9) > Fedora's bug for this; https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=524244 That's not the right URL.
The good news is: someone's from red hat is working on a fix since they need this fixed for FC12 which is already a few days late. The bad news, there's no patch now that completely fixes the issue without causing extra bugs. So for now, I won't put this patch in portage. You're very much welcome to help RH devs fix the bug by testing whatever patches they cook up and see if it breaks. Thanks

For information the upstream bug report: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25136
Thanks, let's track the bug upstream directly. Cheers

Fixed in xorg-server-1.7.2
Bumped in main tree.
Just emerged xorg-server-1.7.2 and did emerge `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`. The problem as described originally is still with me, except the keyboard works, and I can kill ddd in a console window. (The mouse buttons stop working after a right click on data in the data window.)
FTR, 1.7.2 breaks the server ABI so I've masked it until a proper solution is found. Thanks
It may be the problem is not in xorg-server but in the nvidia-drivers in conjunction with xorg-server, see http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-799568-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html?sid=f26ca9d91476d93aab8f003cedd5c324. But the latest nvidia-driver in portage, 190.42-r3, does work with xorg-server-1.6.5-r1.

That's about the fact that we were explicitly blocking the newer version of xorg-server with nvidia-drivers.
I emerged xorg-server-1.7.2 and the Gimp crash problem doesn't show up anymore. I haven't rebuild other xorg based stuff, and haven't found any problem yet but I will rebuild in case ABI change breack things.
I'm getting the same problems from xorg-server-1.7.3.
(In reply to comment #23) > I'm getting the same problems from xorg-server-1.7.3. > Then you're getting another bug. Please file a new bug report. Meanwhile, this bug report is fixed. Closing. Thanks
As requested I've opened up a new bug: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=295967 Seems a bit strange as I originated this one, and this one has not been fixed for me.
