Description Dereck 2009-11-02 14:42:33 UTC
When logging into wdm, it restarts X and requires me to login again. The second time seems to work.

/var/log/messages show this error during that login event.

Nov 2 08:55:14 mobi login[4697]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on 'tty2' FOR `UNKNOWN', User not known to the underlying authentication module

Nov  2 08:55:20 mobi login[4697]: pam_unix(login:session): close_session - error recovering username

If I comment out the following in the /etc/inittab the problem goes away completely. The error messages do not occur, and I only have to login once.

# TERMINALS
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
#c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install wdm
2. set xdm to start at default runlevel
3. try to login with normal user

Sorry for the slow response, November has been a very busy month...

Please post additional information if you're still interested in debugging this weird conflict between wdm and agetty:
* emerge -pv wdm
* emerge -pv util-linux
* emerge --info
Comment 2 Dereck 2009-11-25 03:57:32 UTC
Here is the information request. I should note, that I have installed slim and do not experience the issue. X starts on tty7 as it should. However wdm still wants to control tty2.

/etc/conf.d/xdm has this variable set for checking a specific terminal.
CHECKVT=7

I was checking Bug #290034 and its issues could be related to this. I have the same issue as well. It maybe because wdm is running on tty2 which is not confirmed by anyone else in that ticket.
