Description Kevin F. Quinn 2009-10-11 12:35:42 UTC
A while back, cups stopped accepting requests in anything other than US-ASCII or UTF8 (see http://www.cups.org/strfiles/2537/str2537.patch) and samba had to
change to match (see http://git.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=commitdiff;h=a1323951a). However this has won't be back-ported to 3.0 (https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5080 - perhaps it's not a trivial back-port) and the latest stable version of samba in portage at the time of writing is 3.0.36.

Cups went stable with this change quite a while back - I think from cups-1.3.4.

So, current stable x86 samba and cups don't interoperate - they may do if your locale is C but I haven't checked.

Please can you either stabilise a version >3.2, or backport the fix?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install samba, cups, configure for cups printing and scan from another machine.
2.
3.

Actual Results:
no printer available to the other machine

Expected Results:
printer should have been available

CUPS reports the following in its error log when samba starts:
Unsupported character set "iso-8859-1"!

and the following in the access_log:
POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 134 CUPS-Get-Printers client-error-bad-request
POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 134 CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-bad-request

indicating samba is making an incompatible request.

Suggest either stabilising a later (>=3.2) samba, or backporting the samba fix.

This bug is no longer relevant - later versions of both packages have stabilised a long time ago.
