A regular: $ emerge php should provide default php functionalities. Currently, filter, json, simplexml, sqlite, tokenizer (and maybe other) use flags are not active by default which provides a very minimal PHP installation (much more minimal than configuring it with a simple "./configure"). IMHO, this is wrong because without specific +- USE flags, PHP should come with vanilla functionalities and not as a minimal build. However, a "minimal" USE flag may be considered.
BUMP, someone?
We will discuss this for the soon to be php-5.3 on our 25th April meeting. You're welcome join us in #gentoo-php on freenode to discuss this. To be clear: we don't accept feature requests on php-5.2 anymore. All new work will go into php-5.3 I've rewritten the summary to match your stated proposal.

It was quite a bit of work but I just committed a php-5.3.2 to the php overlay which has USE-defaults that match the vanilla build. This will migrate to the main tree shortly. I'll RESO FIX the bug when that happens.
In CVS.
