on attempt to install xft because of font problems and reason to believe that xft 
not being installed is the problem, the following errors are returned: 
 
darkbook xft # emerge xft 
Calculating dependencies ...done! 
 
!!! Error: the >=x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 package conflicts with this package and 
both can't be installed on the same system together.

xft is already provided by xfree
you need fontconfig

for font issues I suggest you to use the bitstream vera ones.
