I am aware the binutils version in question is masked and the gold linker is new and experimental. The failure is pretty strange (to me): when configure is checking whether the compiler can compile "int main() { return 0; }", it calls the compiler and then the linker, and then executes the resulting executable and checks the error code. But the executable file's permissions are 644, so you get "permission denied". I used strace to see the linker do fstat( ... 755 when I ran it manually and 644 when configure ran it. I don't know what influences this. The old linker works. Gold did build many other things, so I'm puzzled. Meanwhile I'm back to the old linker, but I will provide any info and test any patches. This package is out of tree. Recent ebuilds e.g. ffmpeg-0.5_p19928 configures cleanly with gold 2.20.51.0.2.
