Thanks for the report and patch. Is there a good way to make this user-selectable (maybe dependent on what's already on his system)? I'm trying to figure out if bug #282754 is for completely removing ttf-bitstream-vera or if it should be an "or" dependency. While we're on the subject, when I initially created the ebuild, I had to add the line "/usr/share/fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera" in interface.c that you can see in the patch. When I submitted it to the author, I also expressed my wish for a better way to search for fonts. Any thoughts that I can pass upstream? I hate to keep sending patches for font issues.
I've sent a patch upstream, so I think this issue should be resolved in the next release (see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=4AB97514.7030100%40gentoo.org&forum_name=xwax-devel). The new dep will be on media-libs/fontconfig (and I can remove ttf-bitstream-vera).
Resolved (to a hardcoded dejavu font) in version 0.7.
