Just talked with Paul. The other bug says to remove entries from /var/cache/edb/virtuals file, but his virtuals file doesn't have xemacs anywhere in it, so the solution doesn't apply.
All set Paul. xemacs was missing from /usr/portage/profiles/default-alpha-1.4/virtuals (it was recently added to x86, apparently)
