So I did the following replacement in fetchmail. You will not see the problem anymore when installing fetchmail.

- python_mod_optimize /usr/$(get_libdir)/python${PYVER}/site-packages
+ python_mod_optimize /usr/$(get_libdir)/python${PYVER}/site-packages/fetchmailconf.py

To *fix* your problem, you should fix:
/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/mx/TextTools/TextTools.py
/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/virtconv/diskcfg.py

BTW: I have app-emulation/virtinst-0.500.0 installed and no problems with virtconv/diskcfg.py

These syntax errors have aren't at all related to fetchmail.

> Compiling //usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/mx/TextTools/TextTools.py ...
> SyntaxError: ('invalid syntax',
> ('//usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/mx/TextTools/TextTools.py', 170, 26, 'def
> replace(text,what,with,start=0,stop=None,\n'))

/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/mx/TextTools/TextTools.py belongs to dev-python/egenix-mx-base. This file is fixed in newer versions of dev-python/egenix-mx-base.

> Compiling //usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/virtconv/diskcfg.py ...
> SyntaxError: ('invalid syntax',
> ('//usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/virtconv/diskcfg.py', 162, 16, '
> if ret = 127:\n'))

/usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/virtconv/diskcfg.py belongs to app-emulation/virtinst.
