Housecleaning. I've waited too long and forgot to post the log and binutils version. Now vlc-1.0.1 is no longer present in portage so the bug cannot be fixed, literally -- or has already been fixed. Mostly my AMD64 machine is dead and I now have a different CPU; I won't be able to reproduce it anyway.
