Hi, HDF5 1.6.9 is out since mid-May, please bump. Cheers, Nico Reproducible: Always
*** Bug 279618 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I just closed Bug 279618 as a duplicate of this bump request, it is a request for 1.8.3 to be bumped and slotted.
I am not so familiar with hdf5, but I worked a fair amount on the 1.8.3 ebuild in the science overlay. It seems that if we want an application to compile with the old 1.6 API it is sufficient to add -DH5_USE_16_API to CPPFLAGS. In that case, I don't see why keeping along the 1.6 versions and not slot it. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
Given that not too many packages use hdf5 I think it might not be worth the trouble to slot hdf5. As you already mentioned, hdf5-1.8 offers a backward compatibility mode to 1.6 via -DH5_USE_16_API which is what we use in the paraview ebuild so everything in the tree that needs hdf5 should compile against 1.8. Best, Markus
OK, then unless someone is willing to re-check the need of slotting, we won't update to 1.6.9, and work on the 1.8.x releases instead.
